Determinants of Maternal Mortality in West Gojjam Zone Public Hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia: A Case-Control Study

| dc.description | Unmatched case-control study was carried out from October 8 to November 15, 2020 on reproductive age (15-49 years) mothers who were pregnant, delivered and within 42 days termination of pregnancy from January 2017 to December 2019. A sample of 385; case (77) and control (308) was used from six public hospitals in west Gojjam zone. Cases were selected retrospectively and sequentially starting from December 2019 to January 2017. The data collection tool was comprised of Obstetric and delivery factors: Gravidity (primi-gravida, gravida 2-4, and multigravida), parity (primi-para, para 2-4, and multipara), antenatal care (ANC) (0-1 visit, 2-3 visit and 4 & above ANC visit), gestational age (≤36wks and ≥37wks). Referral status (referred, not referred), pregnancy lost in the past (yes, no), previous surgery (yes, no), mode of onset of labour (spontaneous or induced), Mode of delivery (Spontaneous vaginal, Caesarean section delivery, Instrumental delivery, Assisted breech delivery). Current pregnancy complication (Preeclampsia/ eclampsia (PIH), hemorrhage (APH/PPH), infection/sepsis, obstructed labor, abortion, ruptured uterus and other) and preexisting medical conditions: Chronic hypertension, anemia, renal disease, cardiac disease, malaria, diabetes, HIV positive, tuberculosis infection, and related characteristics.
